Is it about the gods or what? Thanks, just curious, simple language please, I'm a small child ahaWhat is so special about the star groups that make up the zodiac?
It's animals (; aha small child too lol
The Sun in it yearly course passed through the twelve of them. Well, it did two-thousand years ago. It now passes through a thirteenth: Ophiuchus. And poor little Scorpio gets less than a weeks attention now-a-days.What is so special about the star groups that make up the zodiac?
Nothing special, its all crap.
Nothing.
It's just they way those stars appear from Earth.
They might not even lie close together, just in the same direction.
People are very good about seeing patterns in random distributions. What is so special about the star groups that make up the zodiac?
did you ever look at clouds and imagine they were shaped like bunnies or mountains or flowers? stars are the same way... some are a little brighter and others a little dimmer and ancient navigators who spent all night staring at them mentally played connect the dots and came up with these random images. Then they invented myths and stories so they could remember them and pass them on to other sailors and navigators. The stars themselves are ENTIRELY random, except maybe for a general tendency towards "brightness"
The signs of the Zodiac arose from the nature of humans to find meaning and patterns in all things, including the stars. They discovered that the stars moved synchronously to the passage of each day and each year. This seemed to give them special importance; the positions of the identified star groups could be used as an astronomical time piece. People related the patterns of certain groupings of stars, that divided the cosmos into 12 divisions, with the identities of animals. In the totemic religions of the time, people were also believed to be embodied with the identity and a particular characteristic (spirit) of an animal. Association of these totemic beliefs with the signs of the zodiac caused people to believe that each moment of their lives was affected by the prevalent sign at the particular time, related to the sign that was prevalent at the time of their birth. Since some people still believe in astrology, these groupings of stars still hold significance and are "special" to them.
There is nothing special at all in the shapes of constellations. They almost certainly originated in ancient Mesopotamia when shepherd boys, bored with watching over their sheep, made up stories for each other to explain the various perceived pictures they saw in the sky. Gradually, these became absorbed into to folklore, which we seem to be stuck with today. If you could move some way round the galaxy from where you are now, those patterns would change into other patterns, because the stars in them are not all the same distance from us.
